Is China visa-free for Irish citizens?

Ireland is one of the 50 countries on China’s 30-day visa-free list. For a normal holiday or business trip, that means no visa application, no embassy appointment, no fee — just a passport, a return ticket and a hotel address.

There are a few exclusions worth knowing, and one expiry date that matters if you are planning 2027.

What Irish passport holders get

  • Up to 30 days per entry, anywhere in China.
  • No route requirement — a simple Dublin → Beijing → Dublin trip qualifies.
  • Tourism, business meetings, family visits and transit are all covered purposes.
  • The policy currently runs until 31 December 2026.

What is not covered

  • Work, study and journalism — these need a visa obtained in advance.
  • Stays longer than 30 days on a single entry.
  • Travel on emergency or temporary travel documents — the policy applies to ordinary passports.
  • Guaranteed entry: the border officer still makes the final call, based on your documents and stated purpose.

What to have ready at the border

  • A passport valid for your stay — six months’ validity is a common airline requirement even where the policy asks for less.
  • A return or onward ticket, already issued.
  • The address of your first hotel.
  • For business trips, an invitation or company letter if you have one — it smooths the conversation, though it is not strictly required.

Planning a 2027 trip

The 30-day policy is written to run until 31 December 2026 for most countries on the list, Ireland included. China has extended this policy repeatedly and the list has only grown, but an extension for 2027 has not been announced yet.

The practical advice: book 2026 travel normally, and re-check the policy before booking a non-refundable 2027 trip. This site tracks the current expiry date on every country page.

Ireland also appears on the 240-hour transit and Hainan lists, but neither is needed while the 30-day scheme covers you — it is strictly more flexible.

Frequently asked

Do Irish citizens need a visa for China in 2026?+

No, for stays of up to 30 days. Ireland is on the 30-day visa-free list, currently valid until 31 December 2026.

Can Irish citizens stay longer than 30 days?+

Not on a single visa-free entry. You would need a tourist or business visa from the Chinese visa application service centre, or to leave and re-enter — and each re-entry is assessed on its own merits.

Does the visa-free entry cover Hong Kong?+

No. Hong Kong has its own immigration system and is separately visa-free for Irish passport holders for up to 90 days. Travel between the mainland and Hong Kong counts as leaving and re-entering China.
